After attending the World Gaming Street Fighter V tournament a few days ago in Toronto, I have the privilege to announce some pretty big news for the eSports industry in Canada. The staff at World Gaming let it be known that the next grand championship Cineplex style tournament would be hosted in Toronto this summer. Uncharted 4 was the game announced and the open qualifiers begin June 16 working its way until July 10, 2016. Regional finals will then commence in 24 different Cineplex theatres located across Canada on July 24, 2016. The top 24 teams will then compete head-to-head for a top 8 spot in online qualifiers. The elite 8 will duke it out Nathan Drake style in a grandiose spectacle in downtown Toronto on August 28th, 2016. If you are interested in competing, sign up now to get ahead start.
The “special announcement” which was made during the recent event concluded that the next tournament would be for Uncharted 4 in a 5 v 5 team bracket style format. The host also mentioned a large cash prize upwards of 100k. The first place team will receive half of the prize pool for 50k. Second and third place teams will receive 10,000 and 5,000 respectively. Not too bad, eh?
Executive Vice President of WorldGaming, Wim Stocks, mentioned that “With two successful one-vs-one tournaments under our belt, we thought it would be great to launch our first team-based tournament with the highly anticipated, fourth installment in a truly epic series – Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End.” He then went on to say “We really are creating an event the likes of which the gaming community in Canada has never seen.” This is especially big news for me because I grew up when the competitive gaming scene was first starting to blossom and gain recognition in Canada and the US. Having a Toronto based Tech company focused on eSports like World Gaming is a major step in the right direction for the industry and its players in Canada.
It is well known that Canada and the US produce some of the best gamers in every genre of games, not just PlayStation 4. It will be interesting to see the level of competition at the up and coming Uncharted 4 tournament. As a gamer, one of the things that intrigues me the most is the fact that it is still a relatively new game. It only came out on May 10th, which is less than 1 month ago at the time of this post. What this means is that forming a 5 player squad might be difficult. If teams are serious about qualifying for this event, they should start rallying the troops and start practicing. With such a massive prize pool of over 100,000k, you’ll be sure to see players from all over the country sign up for this one.
